Our journey began amidst the challenging times of the Covid-19 lockdown when this poignant image captured our attention and sparked a profound realisation. This Image backed with the responses to our survey, encapsulated the stark reality that while digital literacy flourished in urban areas during the lockdown, many rural students were left behind, devoid of access to educational resources and opportunities.

The name VertSTEM embodies our vision and values. Derived from the French word "Vert," meaning green, it symbolizes not only the color of life but also the freshness and fertility of young minds. At VertSTEM, we are committed to nurturing and cultivating these young minds, empowering them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world

The Problem We are Addressing

We address inequitable access to digital literacy in Africa, particularly in communities where children lack essential resources like computers, internet access, and electricity. Despite STEM being pivotal for future career prospects, many African children are disadvantaged by the digital divide and inadequate government support.

This disparity is exacerbated by the transition to computer-based examinations, where students from underserved communities struggle due to limited computer literacy. Moreover, generational poverty perpetuates systemic barriers, with young girls facing early pregnancies and youths succumbing to substance abuse, hindering their ability to pursue higher education.

Our Proposed Approach

Leveraging satellite-based internet and solar energy, we aim to establish Solar-powered computer hubs in these areas, fostering developmental progress. We will pave the path towards digital transformation and sustainable development by empowering rural children with digital literacy, modern agricultural practices, and advocacy for climate action and SDGs.

By tackling these multifaceted challenges, VertSTEM strives to empower underserved youth with the skills, resources, and support necessary to thrive in STEM fields, motivating them to pursue higher education, breaking the cycle of poverty, and fostering a brighter future for generations.
